Activity Summary

The Young People’s Reproductive and Sexual Health Behavior Change Communication Program began on July 1, 2004, through an USAID Associate Award to the Health Communication Partnership (HCP), with funding from USAID and President Bush’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).  The overall purposes of the Young Empowered and Healthy (Y.E.A.H.) initiative are to:

  • Assist the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) HIV/AIDS Partnership to establish a sustainable mechanism to support coordinated social and behavior change communication (BCC) for young people 15 – 24 years old in Uganda; and

  • Design, implement and evaluate two national multi-channel social and behavior change communication efforts by and for young people.  The aim is to prevent HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancies while keeping young people in school.

In addition to support provided through HCP, Y.E.A.H. receives direct funding through Save the Children in Uganda (Norwegian government funding), the UPHOLD Project, the CORE Initiative Uganda, UNICEF (non-US government funding) and the AIDS Information Centre (AIC). Most funding support continues to come from US government sources.

The Y.E.A.H. initiative is structured to contribute to three key results:

  1. KEY RESULT: Increased utilization of services (educational, health, legal, HIV/AIDS) by young people. Anticipated Outcomes of this result include:
    • Improved attitudes toward and knowledge about health services among young people.
    • Improved attitudes toward and knowledge about other social services among young people.

  2. KEY RESULT: Environment supportive of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) among young people. Anticipated Outcomes of this result include:
    • Improved access to SRH information among young people.
    • Increased public support for practices among young people that improve their SRH.
    • Strengthened community capacity to address vulnerabilities of young people.

  3. KEY RESULT: Capacity of local institutions to design, coordinate and manage social and BCC strengthened. Anticipated Outcomes of this result include:
    • Strengthened collaboration among partners involved in SRH communication for and by young people.
    • Increased capacity of young people to design and implement BCC programs.
    • Increased involvement of young people in designing and implementing programs.
