Activity Summary
HCP’s main objective was “to support the MOH National Five-Year Integrated Plan” and the “Policy of Reduction of Maternal and Perinatal Mortality.” The four main expected results of the communication program in six priority provinces were
- Maternal and Reproductive Health/Family Planning service providers and MOH RESP/SESP (Education and Communication Unit) capacity in Interpersonal Communication and Counseling Skills (CIPA) strengthened and updated to promote FP informed choice and birth spacing at the health post and community levels.
- Family planning and birth spacing services positioned at the health service and community level.
- Youth Friendly Services (SAAJ) strengthened and equipped with community communication strategies and action plans among activistas.
- Child health, nutrition and immunization services strengthened with communication tools to promote healthy practices at the post and community levels.
- Community participation and health promotion approaches and methodologies improved.
Implementation Process
HCP support to the Maternal and Reproductive Health/Family Planning included:
- strengthening health service delivery with FP CIPA skills and job aids
- creating demand for family planning/spacing services among young couples and adolescents;
- strengthening the MOH Youth Friendly Services’ communication and outreach capacity; and
- promoting timely health-seeking behavior for integrated child health.
HCP supported the design and management of over 20 CIPA Workshops and training of trainers. As a result, CIPA standards of good practice became part of the MOH Integrated Supervision Training Course.
HCP supported MOH and Zambezia province partners in strategic design, message development and pre-testing techniques to design and produce print materials, radio and theater programs.
HCP has been assisting the MOH’s SAAJ in the conceptualization, design and launching of services since its inception in 2001. During 03-04 HCP supported the training of 150 SAAJ Activists in six provinces (Gaza, Manica, Nampula, Niassa, Sofala and Zambézia).
In close coordination with the MOH Child health Program and Health Provincial authorities in Gaza, Sofala, Manica, Nampula, Niassa and Zambézia, HCP helped produce a number of client and health provider communication materials to promote timely health-seeking behavior for integrated child health.
