Activity Summary
This component has taken special interest in university students and has created Hayatee Ahla teams to spread health knowledge about life planning and family planning to their peers through different atypical activities. These teams act as pivotal points in their communities acting as sources of influence to others during their crucial decision-making time in their lives
Strategy
There has been a generational shift in fertility desires and contraceptive use in Jordan. There is now a gap between what older people want and do, and the desires of young, particularly unmarried, youth. For example, younger people are beginning to support the idea of contraceptive use after the first birth. In addition, younger populations have lower fertility desires than older populations, but still desire family sizes that are above the national replacement level.
Due to the fact that these family size desires are shifting among youth, the Hayatee Ahla campaign is designed to support, maintain, and accelerate the shift that has already begun. In order to target those young people who will be faced with decisions about family size, birth spacing, and contraceptive use in the very near future, the campaign focuses on peri-marital youth, those who are either engaged or are newly married. As adolescents will soon enter the age when they too will need to make these important family planning decisions, adolescents make up this campaign’s secondary audience. And because family ties (and influence) is strong in Jordan, the parents of peri-marital youth will be a tertiary audience in order to increase their support for their children’s efforts to have a smaller family.
