Handwashing with Soap
Activity Dates
2004-2005
Activity Summary
Between the end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005, KuIS pioneered the Handwashing With Soap (HWS) campaign in the provinces of Banten and North Sumatra, based on extensive formative research. Implementing the country’s first Hand Washing with Soap movement drew considerable interest from partners, donors and other stakeholders. The movement continues to package and promote its products to ensure buy-in from other donors and provide services to a broader audience to leverage additional funds while reducing incidence of acute diarrhea diseases. Some stakeholders have added to the HWS effort. For example, the Provincial Health Promotion Board (PHPB) in North Sumatra province requested that all health proposals funded by PHPB integrate HWS into all programs until 2007. Mass media and the local government also gave their full support to this campaign and have urged all stakeholders to join the movement.
Implementation
Banten and North Sumatra are USAID’s focus areas in Indonesia. The campaign is KuIS’s flagship program that actually launched in January 2005. In Banten, the campaign is in 4 districts partnering with Laz Harfa, an association of Muslim organizations from five districts within Banten united into a single, sustainable, and an influential organization. Laz Harfa concentrates on community development and fundraising. In North Sumatra the campaign covered 5 districts. The campaign focused at the community level through community-based handwashing promotion activities and was supported by mass media, mainly radio. The community mobilization activities are the driving force behind the program. KuIS implemented the activities in partnership with local coalitions, the DAP partners, and other organizations, where possible, by integrating the campaign messages and materials into their on-going programs and working with micro-credit network, religious organizations and local journalists. As these programs are considered on-going, the handwashing messages and materials will not be new “stand alone” programs but will be fully integrated into their existing activities.
