Building new social norms to fight HIV/AIDS among urban youth
Activity Dates
2005-2007
Activity Summary
In 2006, HCP was asked to do a second intervention for urban youth to prevent HIV/AIDS. This new program had an innovative focus by addressing gender norms, masculinity and interpersonal communications which research has shown to influence risk behaviors among youth. Research done focusing on adolescent and young men's health behaviors demonstrate that they are directly related to the health of adolescent girls. Adolescent boys face high risk of STIs and HIV/AIDS due to early sexual activity, and research suggests that young men form attitudes towards women and sex, as well as use of violence and pressure for sex, that continue into adulthood.
A mass media mini-series focuses on postponing sexual debut and partner reduction in the new urban youth enter-education media intervention. The HCP urban youth three-part TV mini-series called Different 2 all, which focuses on postponing sexual debut and partner reduction for HIV/AIDS prevention, will be aired in July 2007 with the endorsement and support of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Xiomara de Zelaya and the youth Ministry, as well as the Secretariat of Health. Three radio and TV spots, based on the mini-series characters and situations promoting delay of sexual activity and fidelity as options to prevent HIV/AIDS will also air. Launching of the mini-series for youth will take place in cinemas in July 2007.
