Using Entertainment Education (EE) to provide HIV/AIDS prevention

Activity Dates

2004-2007

Activity Summary

As a result of the success of the first mass media campaign, in 2004 HCP implemented a new campaign directed at vulnerable groups with high HIV/AIDS prevalence: Garifuna, men who have sex with men (MSM), commercial sex workers, and people living with HIV/AIDS. This campaign used the EE approach, specifically community theatre and radio to promote HIV prevention messages.

Implementation Process

The establishment of the IEC Sub Committees with two vulnerable groups, Garifuna and MSM, has considerably empowered them to take leadership in designing their first IEC strategy to prevent HIV/AIDS. For the first time, both groups presented their IEC strategy at the eighth STI/HIV/AIDS Congress held in Tegucigalpa in March of 2004. The groups implemented their strategies using an entertainment education approach, through theatre skits that reflect the reality of the group members with HIV/ AIDS prevention messages.

Taking advantage of artistic talents of volunteers that belong to several NGOs working with vulnerable groups, volunteers were trained in message development and dramatic arts to produce skits with preventive health messages. A series of EE presentations took place in different groups' venues such as "Gay Talent Nights," Weekend Fairs and Special Meetings culminating on the National Celebration of AIDS Day in early December as the cornerstone of their activities to prevent HIV/AIDS. After the presentations, the groups encouraged audience participation to discuss the health prevention messages.

Evaluation/Findings

Evaluation results conducted among Garifuna youth and the MSM population exposed to the EE drama showed a significant increase in knowledge of HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors, intention to engage in discussions about HIV/AIDS and the intention to seek VCT services. The impact was also evident among the volunteer theatre group members and actors; it empowered then to talk about HIV and HIV/AIDS prevention with their peers and to make informed choices about their own behavior. It also provided the volunteers with opportunities to be part of the fight against HIV in their community.
