Sara Initiative
Activity Dates
2002-2004
Activity Summary
Young women are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS for both biological and social reasons. To increase the skills and self-efficacy of this critical audience, HCP disseminated Sara Initiative materials, originally developed by UNICEF, to schools and youth groups throughout Ghana. “Sara” added a new and important dimension to the Stop AIDS, Love Life intervention as it focuses on issues of self-efficacy, self-esteem and decision-making skills for the female child. HCP also assisted with training of trainers in NGOs and schools to enable them to facilitate activities associated with the Sara Initiative, including watching videos, disseminating print materials and enabling discussions. The Sara videos were also broadcast on national television followed by a discussion program. These activities complemented the ongoing “Stop AIDS, Love Life” and “Life Choices” campaigns. In addition, 10 trainings were conducted for District level managers in each of the 35 SCI pilot districts of Ghana. These Master trainers act as catalysts for the widespread use and distribution of Sara Kits among NGOs, educators and community groups. The training workshops helped to build the capacity of NGOs and community groups in participatory and entertaining approaches to behavior change.
