The K4Health Malawi Pilot Project focuses on three key intervention areas: (1) formation of a national Knowledge Management Taskforce to manage and disseminate technical information on FP/RH and HIV/AIDS, including centralized “toolkits,” or electronic libraries of essential resources; (2) establishment of District Learning Centers to support information flow from and to the national, district, and community levels; (3) creation of an SMS-based mobile phone network between district health centers and community health workers (CHWs). Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the pilot project is implemented by Management Sciences for Health and is part of the global K4Health Project.

The Malawi Health Toolkits were developed by a Task Force drawn from various organizations implementing reproductive health and HIV/AIDS interventions in Malawi. These include the Malawi Ministry of Health (Reproductive Health and Health Education Units), the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Malawi Bridge Project, the National AIDS Commission, UNAIDS, Management Sciences for Health, Population Services International, Banja la Mtsogolo, the Futures Group, FHI, C-CHANGE, IntraHealth, UNFPA, CHAI, Save the Children, the Family Planning Association of Malawi, the National Youth Council of Malawi, and the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives.
K4Health toolkits are collections of carefully selected information resources on a particular topic, created specifically for health policy makers, program managers, and service providers. You are encouraged to suggest resources or post comments the discussion board in each toolkit.
In July - September 2009, K4Health conducted a health information needs assessment in three districts in Malawi; Lilongwe, Salima, and Nkhotakota. The study used qualitative methods to determine the need for health information in HIV/AIDS and family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) at all levels of the health system; commonly used channels for accessing and sharing information; and challenges faced by different cadres of managers and health providers when seeking or sharing information.
